Dear Brookline Residents,
The Brookline Community Development Corporation writes to you today with deep sadness and concern following the disturbing act of vandalism that took place at The Butcherie grocery store on Sunday morning. A brick was thrown through its window, targeting a message that read “Free Palestine.” This act of violence was not just a physical attack on a business, but an act of hate— an antisemitic act that has shaken our community.
There is no place for antisemitism, hatred, or violence in Brookline. Our town has always prided itself on being a place where people of all backgrounds, faiths, and beliefs can live and work in safety and mutual respect. What happened at The Butcherie stands in direct opposition to those values.
We must be clear: violence does not bring justice. It does not advance peace. It does not honor the humanity of anyone involved in difficult global conflicts. Instead, it tears at the fabric of our local community and stokes fear, division, and harm.
At a time when the world feels heavy with grief and complexity, we urge all members of our community to reject hate and recommit ourselves to compassion, dialogue, and mutual care. We can hold different views, express solidarity, and work for justice—without resorting to harm.
Let us stand with our Jewish neighbors, with all who feel threatened or targeted, and with the values that bind us together as Brookline residents: dignity, safety, and respect for all.
With solidarity and hope,
Brookline Community Development Corporation Board
